Heritage Trails

Set off on a journey into the past! The 14 Heritage Trails show you something of the history of the villages and people of Anniviers, through their buildings and other structures, relating them to the life of the inhabitants.

Nestling on the hillside above the road that dates back to the late 19th century, Ayer is characterised by its log buildings clustered around the church. This route takes in 10 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

 

The old village of Chandolin lies at an altitude of 1936 m. Chandolin is considered to be one of the highest year-round inhabited villages in Europe. This route takes in 11 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

 

Fang, a small village in the heart of the Val d'Anniviers, is made up of three sections, Fang d'en-haut, du-milieu and d'en-bas, all between 900 and 1000m. The route takes in 13 emblematic posts in the village.

 

Grimentz is considered to be one of the most traditional villages in the Valais, thanks to the character of its centre.This route takes in 15 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

 

The village enjoys a beautiful location on an intermediate terrace on the south-western slopes of the valley.This route takes in 13 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

 

This peaceful village, with its fine concentration of houses with larch shingle roofs, has retained its character of yesteryear. According to the Siegfried map of 1892, Mission has hardly changed in size.

 

Mottec was once a natural stopping place for Anniviards on their way to the mayens and for travellers on their way to the hotels in Zinal. This route takes in 6 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

 

As the gateway to the valley, it has always enjoyed a privileged position. The feudal lords of Anniviers built their castle here as long ago as 1097. This route takes in 8 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

 

Thanks to its location, Pinsec is the only village in the valley to have survived the 20th century without undergoing major changes. This route takes in 17 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

 

In a 1930 photograph taken from Mission, Saint-Jean appears on a moraine shoulder in a tiered formation of three districts. Take your first look at the village from Mission.  This route takes in 22 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

 

The village of Saint-Luc sits on a sun-drenched balcony at an altitude of 1650 m on the right bank of the Navisence river. This route takes in 22 of the village's most emblematic landmarks

 

Built above the Navisence river, this fortified village controlled the main access route to the valley. This trail takes in 18 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.

 

Situated at an altitude of 1670m, at the foot of the Imperial Crown (five peaks over 4000m), Zinal has around 200 year-round residents and 4000 beds available. This route takes in 17 of the village's most emblematic landmarks.
